February is marked in the Dominican calendar to celebrate one of their most momentous festivals: Carnival. Color, joy and popular culture take over the towns and cities of the Dominican Republic.
Every Sunday in February, different cities in the interior of the country join the great party, each with a particular touch to their parades, the Carnival of La Vega, is the most recognized.
Many characters are characteristic of Carnival, the most famous is the Cojuelo Devil, a suggestive being in colorful attire, dressed in mirrors, bells and ribbons, with a large mask with horns and armed with enthusiasm; Other well-known characters are: Roba la Gallina, Califé, Las Cachúas and Guloyas from San Pedro de Macorís, declared by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
